Dr. Marie-Carin von Gumppenberg works in and on Central Asia and the Caucasus since 1996.
After working and researching in Kazakhstan she accomplished her Ph.D. in Political Sciences on State- and Nation-building in Kazakhstan in 2000.
1998 till 2000 she was temporary employed by the Munich ifo-Institute to write country reports on the macro-economic development in Central Asia, published by the German Ministry of Economics (see also list of publications).
2000 till 2001 she worked as OSCE-Human Dimension Officer in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, mainly focusing on conflict management, democratisation and human rights issues.
2003 till 2005 she worked as Political Officer at the OSCE Centre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she monitored the December 2004 Parliamentary elections, promoted media freedom and built up capacities of border guards, customs, arms control officers and police unites.
2005 till April 2009 she worked as Election/Democratisation Officer for the OSCE Mission to Georgia, Tbilisi. Her areas of responsibility were elections (assistance, monitoring), political parties (development) and parliament (reform).
Since May 2009 she is Senior Good Governance Officer of the OSCE Mission in Skopje, Macedonia. She covers the issues such as democratisation/elections, public administration and education in multiethnic societies.
In 2001 she launched the Policy Studies Central Asia & Caucasus, an independent, non-partisan organisation, writing policy studies on Central Asia and the Caucasus, giving strategic advice, organising and moderating seminars and conferences, and conducting fact-finding missions.
Dr. Marie-Carin von Gumppenberg is fluent in Russian and English. She has good French skills and sufficient Italian, Uzbek and Georgian language skills.
Her numerous publications focus on crisis prevention and conflict management, security issues as well as democratisation and political stability in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
